There's no reason my Magic Returns world can't be a myth parallel of Earth. SJ Games' world Yrth is.
Something that always messes me up about fantasy worlds are religion and naming.
Making this world a parallel lets me leave serial numbers intact when I steal things.
Religion...
Roman Gods! Jupiter, Mars, Venus, the works. Anything I get "wrong" will be attributed to historians and archeologists on Earth getting it wrong because they cannot actually communicate with The Gods.
Priests communicate with The Gods in Greek. Well... A descendant of Ancient Greek, it's had a couple thousand years to drift from the parent language. Someone who speaks Ancient Greek or Modern Greek would have broken for written and nothing for spoken. Of course, I doubt there's a single person from Earth there.
The more common tongue spoken by The Coastal City States is (drum-roll) Latin. And again it's as drifted from Roman Latin as French is in our world.
A note that seems to go along with language is the concept of zero was discovered by The Fallen Empire and has been retained.
With religion comes the use of Power Investiture and Sanctity. The hard part is making deity specific spell lists and/or making decisions on the fly for "off list" requests by the priests. (And getting the players to actually read the handout.) Priests of Pantheon are keepers of the whole faith with an emphasis on conflict resolution between the specialized priests.
