Things That You End Up Looking Up

Watched a film, The Siege of Jadotville, where a character claims the uranium for the US atomic bombs used on Japan came from Katanga, Belgian Congo.

It's true!  Mostly.

But it wasn't like they decided that they needed the stuff and had it mined.  Much of the unrefined ore, 1,200 tons of uranium-oxide, was sitting in a warehouse in Staten Island!  3,000 tons had already been mined and was warehoused near the mine in Shinkolobwe.

Ontario, Canada is where most of it came from, and some from Colorado.

Late in the war, ore was being mined in the Shinkololbwe, but it had taken years of negotiation by the British to get the place reopened.
